Our Spine Calculator setup has recently changed, please see details below for more information.

We have developed a new Spine Calculator for Perfect Bound books within our system, replacing the external one we previously used. This update ensures a more accurate final spine width, which will help you provide cover files at the correct size.

Where is it?

You can find the new calculator in the Quick Quotes area, right where you would create quotes usually. See below - we've made it the first option you see.




How to use it

This calculator works much like one of the quote products, you input your book size, cover stock, text stock and page count, then click Get Price. Don't worry, there is no charge behind these, clicking 'Get Price', just moves the calculator along. 

We have not included Laminate and other finishing options on purpose as this does not affect the result.




A "Quote" will be generated with your book size and spine width in the description.



This is NOT your final print quote. When you are ready to go to print, you will need a proper production quote.
Please contact your account manager if you need clarification.

At this stage, you can choose to email this to yourself or a 3rd party so that you have it handy. Otherwise, you can close the window.


Calculating Cover Page Size for Design

If you'd like to know what size to create your cover file, use this simple calculation. In the below example, we use the sizing from the example above for a book 127 x 203mm, 

Flat Page Width: Book width + Spine + Book width
Therefore: 127 + 8 + 127 = 262mm

Flat Page Height: Book height only.
Therefore: = 203mm

Final Flat Cover Calculation: (h x w + 3mm Bleed) = 203 x 262mm Plus 3mm bleed on all edges (Art box size: 209 x 268mm)
